Oxytetracycline was the second of the broad-spectrum tetracycline group of antibiotics to be discovered. Oxytetracycline works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to produce essential proteins. Without these proteins, the bacteria cannot grow, multiply and increase in numbers. Oxytetracycline therefore stops the spread of the infection and the remaining bacteria are killed by the immune system or eventually die. Oxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, active against a wide variety of bacteria. However, some strains of bacteria have developed resistance to this antibiotic, which has reduced its effectiveness for treating some types of infections.

Indications

For the treatment of infections caused by organisms sensitive to oxytetracycline in horses, cattle and sheep.

In vitro, oxytetracycline is active against a range of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms including:

Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., L. monocytogenes, P. haemolytica, H. parahaemolyticus and B. bronchiseptica and against Chlamydophila abortus, the causative organism of enzootic abortion in sheep.

Contra-indications

Do not administer animals known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient.

Side Effects

Although the product is well tolerated, occasionally a slight local reaction of a transient nature has been observed.

Dosage

Oral administration

Once per kg body weight Pig, sputum, lamb 40-100mg, Dog 60-200mg, Avian 100-200mg 2-3 times a day for 3-5 days.

Withdrawal Times

Cattle, pigs and sheep for 5 days

Storage

Store below 25ºC, in a cool and dry place, and protect from light.
